To gain the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders also known as Alcohol Licence , learner will need to attend a training course at one of our approved centres  – and pass the examination.

Who is this qualification for?

How long will it take?

The total qualification time (TQT) for this qualification is 10 hours and of this 8 are recommended as guided learning hours (GLH). The course has been designed to be completed in 1 day.

Topics covered

These include the nature, purpose and period of validity of a personal licence, the application process and legal duties when applying for a personal licence, the legal duties of a personal licence holder, the roles, responsibilities and functions of licensing authorities, the nature and strength of alcohol and the effect on the body and the law in relation to premises licences.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) examination. The examination for this qualification contains 40 questions that must be completed within one hour. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the qualification syllabus and achieve a minimum pass mark of 70%.

Condition of Entry

To register onto this qualification, learners are required to meet the following entry requirements:

  • 18 years of age or above
  • It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy or numeracy or equivalent

ID requirements:

The following can be accepted as proof of a learner’s identity:

  • a valid passport (any nationality)
  • a signed UK photocard driving licence
  • a valid warrant card issued by HM forces or the police
  • another photographic ID card, e.g. employee ID card, student ID card, travel card etc.

 The Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders, also known as the APLH Licence, is the basic requirement for selling alcohol within a retail environment. The Personal Licence  Course leads to the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders. This ensures that hospitality workers, bar staff and event managers have attained the necessary skills and qualifications to operate legally, whilst also maintaining a safe environment for their customers, employees and co-workers.
